“Where the Castle Looks out to Sea …” by Dr Alexey Shitvov

On a sunny morning of Saturday 13th August, the Society set out to revisit the historical town of Carrickfergus as part of a field trip which was the first of its kind since the pandemic. The group journeyed via the White House - a 16th century tower house and museum in Newtownabbey - to the magnificent 12th century Carrickfergus Castle and finished with a guided tour of Carrickfergus Museum. Although for most members it was not the first time visiting the places, everyone learnt something new, thanks to the ongoing research and hard work by the castle and museum staff revealing the secrets of the past.
